Please visit CDC here on the proper use of homemade masks here:
2 pieces 100% cotton fabric 6" x 9"
1 piece cotton flannel or 100% Cotton Fabric 6" x 9"
2 elastic strips: 1/8" x 6” women, 7” men, 5” children
Kids size: make fabric 5”x7”, and elastic 5” long.
OUT OF ELASTIC? Use ribbon or fabric ties 18”-20” in length.
See my video on how to make a mask with fabric ties here:
OPTIONAL: To make the nose are a fit better you can sew a wire ribbon, pipe cleaner, or baggie tie to the lining piece before sewing all three layers together. :)
*** Masks are re-usable, but must be sanitized before/after each use! ***
* Use tightly woven cotton fabric, or hospital grade material.
* Keep in mind men and women will be wearing the masks when choosing fabric for mask that will be donated.
* Contact local health facilities to see if they are in need of donations.

Currently, the supply of surgical masks is at a critical all-time low throughout the entire nation. As a community of sewists, this is a great way we can band together and make a huge difference in this time of need!
In addition to helping medical staff during critical shortages, these masks can be used at home as well. While wearing homemade face masks will not prevent against catching a respiratory illness, they can help reduce the spread of large particles when someone sneezes or coughs.
* Fabric: 100% Cotton Quilting Fabric (I used a line from Bonnie and Camille for Moda)
* Juki TL2000 Qi:
* Aurifil 50wt Thread:
* Oliso Pro Smart Iron:
* Scissors:
* Wonder Clips:

Amateur question. What's your advice on the best way of actually cutting the material? Maybe I'm a bit hard on myself but it took a couple hours to cut some decent rectangles with conventional scissors, and yes they were sharp.

I'm at the point where you see the ends to hold the "creases" together and my needle broke twice. I attempted with an universal needle and then tried a leather needle and both times they broke. I even adjusted the tension. Please help. I made 20 that need to be finished. Tysvm.

We homemade several masks. Kind of different from yours the inner layer, facing nose side, you can cut it open. So you can insert one dried wipe to filter out virus thing.

I would love to make these but I can't find elastic that's not been price gouged on shipping or the elastic itself, and/or won't be shipped until June. I will check my fitted sheets but otherwise, any ideas?

Flannel might get hot and if the user sweats on the flannel, it creates a medium for bacteria. I am using non woven interfacing!

So I made some of these and then was told that they wont keep viruses out unless some kind of filter is inserted in between the layers (i.e. a piece of a hepa vacuum filter). Does anyone know anything about this? Are hospitals using them even without a filter sewed in them?
Erica Arndt
Erica Arndt - 18 саат мурун
They will not prevent you from catching a respiratory virus. Hospitals are using them over the top of their N95 masks to help them last longer, I give all of that info in the video itself and also in the description box below the video. Click 'show more' :)

I want to wear DIY masks on N95 masks, which should be able to extend the use time of N95 masks. There is no way, masks are too scarce, I just bought some masks from ojomask, I do not know whether they will be out of stock after a while

Thankyou for helping out our frontline workers! I also liked how in the tutorial you chose to do 2 different fabric prints. Then we can tell which side is the dirty side vs clean side if we happen to have to take it off and reuse it again while at work. Thankyou.

I had an idea to make the mask slightly snug around the nose. I’m going to take a 3 1/2 “ piece of elastic, stretching just slightly and sewing it in two places (similar to what you did w side elastic) in the exact middle so that snugs up just a bit. I hope that made sense. Excellent tutorial btw!

To reuse face masks without washing is by ironing them with hot iron multiple times on both sides to make sure all germs and viruses are killed. This way we don't throw them away during this time of shortage

I live in NYC and both my parents are in their 40s and have underlying medical conditions. Besides the fabrics you used, what else type of fabrics can be used? I have these kinds of fabrics in my sewing kit that are Halloween themed, but they have bats, ghosts and pumpkins on them... and well, I feel like going out with masks with bats on them isnt appropriate right now... Any suggestions from anyone here? Thanks! :)

Thank you so much!! 🙏💖Why are there people disliking this?? 🙄 A mask, ANY MASK is better than NO mask, and this wonderful lady has already explained that this mask is not a substitute for an N95 mask. For most non-médical personnel, we won’t be able to wear an N95 mask for long!
